AGRICULTURAL REMEDY

Distinguished Lawmakers, It is my pleasure and honour to present to you the development in the global and domestic environment. in agricultural sector. We hereby draw your attention on so many obstacles to the success of agriculture in Nigeria such as:

  1. Insurance in agricultural policy that could help farmers when the need arises such insurance could be:

  1. EPIDERMIC: The rapid spread of disease among many people and plant in the same place, a sudden rapid increase in the extent of an undesirable activity. Crops and flowers suffer mostly from disease that from insect pest. The most dreadful disease is downy mildew e.g.
  • SHOT HOLE BORER: Serious from June to October Beetles borne holes in the stem and branches which includes exudation of gum.

  • DOWNY MILDEW: Humid cool weather mostly during July-August and November-December white growth in patches on the lower surface of the leaf. Corresponding upper surface yellow patch up and the leaves drop in server cases.

  • ANTHRACNOSE: Rainy season mostly during July-August and October-December. This disease attacks fresh growth dark brown such on lessons with black centre young berries are affected.

In case of severe damage, the shoot becomes crinkled and the leaf shows short holes, the fruits show bird eye spot symptoms.

  • TERMITES: These feed on the roots and stems. When the

attack is severe, the plant are killed.

Control: young seedlings as transplanting are protected against termites. It generate into marrow of a plant. The plant will wither and die.

  • NEMATODES and Fruit fly etc.

  1. FIRE: The burning that destroy building, vehicles, trees. Fire can be controlled in the farm through fire tracing, keeping the environment clean from weed, fire is manmade.

  1. FLOOD: This could be term partially man made e.g. The flood that occurred in Nigeria when Cameroon opened up their Dan and it over flooded into Nigeria and damaged so many things.

Flood could be controlled when a good waterway is constructed.

  1. SHOCK: This can be described as a natural phenomenon.

  • Shock can occur to the plant on transit.
  • Shock can occur to the plant from thunder strike.
  • Shock can occur to plant through transplanting.
  • Shock can occur to plant through accident.
  • Shock can occur to plant through stomping rainfall.
  • Shock can occur after transplanting and heavy rainfall.
  • Shock can occur to plant through heavy breeze in the field etc.

Agricultural sector has its own language, that whosoever manages agricultural establishment should be well versed in agricultural terms not only buying and selling language, therefore, issues need not to be mixed by banking, insurance companies etc. In view of all the above stated fact, the law makers should advice the insurance industry to include shock for farmers compensation.
